What Astronomy Has Given Humanity

A public lecture by Michal Bursa, Director of the Astronomical Institute

Astronomy is more than the study of distant stars, galaxies and the Universe. It directly influences our everyday lives, often without us realising it. Many technologies we routinely use originated in astronomical research and development.

Alongside these practical contributions, astronomy itself has undergone a profound transformation in recent years, driven by rapid advances in computing, deep learning and artificial intelligence. Astronomers are processing ever larger volumes of data, uncovering new discoveries and gaining a deeper understanding of the laws of nature. The idea of “astronomically large datasets” is suddenly taking on a whole new meaning.
